Q. What is an impervious surface?
A. Impervious surfaces are areas which prevent the saturation of water into the surface of the soil and causes water to run off the surface in greater quantity. Examples of impervious surfaces are black top roads and parking lots, concrete driveways and sidewalks, and rooftops.
An exampe of a PERVIOUS SURFACE is displayed by most of the Beachwood Estates driveways, which are a combination of concrete frames with small rocks in the middle, which allows for better water drainage.
Q. What is a watershed?
A. All the land area that drains to a given body of water.
Every resident of Baltimore County lives in a watershed that drains to the Chesapeake Bay or to a reservoir of our water supply system.
Half of Baltimore County lies within the watersheds of the three reservoirs, Liberty, Loch Raven and Prettyboy Reservoir, which drain to our water supply system.
